logo-apple-valleyApple Valley–the name alone conjures up reminiscences of time gone by, of an era when the clocks beat slower and life was peaceful and less complicated. In fact, that’s the very image Ed and Gretel Metzger sought to create when they acquired their 8.5 acre homestead in the Eastern Pennsylvania hamlet of Milford half a century ago. As they set about establishing what would become their life’s work, they were driven by memories of the California high desert town by a similar name and its motto, “A Better Way of Life.”

apple-valley-outsideNow into its sixth decade of successful operation, Apple Valley Restaurant and its complex of specialty shops is under the direction of second-generation owner Steve Metzger, and the future looks solid. Steve is a graduate of East Stroudsburg University, where he studied the hospitality discipline with a concentration in food and beverage management. After applying his training for a few years in a New York restaurant, he returned to Apple Valley and, in 2000, assumed ownership of the enterprise.

Apple Valley is a rustic place, complete with three ponds, seven specialty retail shops offering visitors the opportunity for a relaxing experience, and (naturally) plenty of apple treesribs. The establishment’s centerpiece, of course, is the Apple Valley Restaurant where good, down home country cooking is melded with a creative collection of dishes covering an extensive range of tastes. You’ll find creations like their Chicken Neptune (crabmeat, shrimp, and scallops served with herb and garlic marinated char-grilled chicken breasts) alongside an array of hand-cut USDA choice steaks grilled over an open flame. Their “Country Cookin” menu features standard favorites like beef brisket, bourbon glazed chicken tenders, and a fantastic dish brand-named “Grandma’s Bread Bowl Pot Pie,” and one section of their extensive bill of fare even includes the “Apple Valley BBQ Pit.” Here you’ll find hand-rubbed baby back ribs and several enticing rib combination platters.

insideThe Restaurant is truly ready to satisfy just about any food craving, from a selection of gourmet burgers to a wide variety of sandwiches, melts, and wraps. Pasta dishes comprise their own menu section, where you’ll find several classic angel hair and penne dishes, as well as a medley of salad dishes, hand-held delicacies, garden salads, and a complete “South of the Border” assortment of Tex-Mex dishes. Beyond its extraordinary restaurant fare, Apple Valley offers the opportunity to relax in an authentic pub environment, complete with its own assortment of “special selections,” ranging from draft beers to a variety of concoctions made to order. The Pub also offers a daily selection of specials, ranging from sandwiches to more traditional “bar food,” like sliders, chicken bites, and just about any type of appetizer you can think of!

Here, you’ll find an amazing selection of sporting goods and sports-themed products, a motorcycle-oriented apparel store, and a craft store dedicated to laser etching. There’s a store for cigar aficionados, a health food store, and a candy cottage to meet the sweet-tooth needs of patrons. There’s also a custom upholstery shop on the property, where the creative use of textiles flourishes to help visitors in the reconstructing and refurbishing of family heirlooms.

Apple Valley has become a favorite place for local clientele and visitors to the Pocono Mountain region. In fact, readers of both the Pocono Record and the Times Herald-Record have recognized the establishment as the “Best Restaurant in Pike County,” an honor bestowed on Apple Valley annually since 2013. “We’re pleased with our stability in a volatile industry,” reports Steve Metzger, “and our staff of 48 food service professionals looks forward to continued, steady growth in the years ahead.” And with what they have to offer a discerning public, it’s likely that Apple Valley will continue to distinguish itself as a “go to” place for years to come.
