Everybody Loves A Bargain!

The U.S. General Services Administration has made it fairly simple for us to take advantage of government surplus items, using their www.gsaauctions.gov website. The site is a window into the federal government’s stockpile of  items no longer needed by civil agencies.

The site is fairly easy to navigate, giving you access to hundreds of items available for bid. From cars, boats, and airplanes to furniture, computers, and cameras, the site’s two dozen categories allow potential shoppers to view specific items and see the status of bidding. If an item grabs your attention, you can also browse a photo and a detailed description of it, including its condition, its installed or included features, and any special information pertaining to it.

Generally, the items offered through gsaauctions.gov are sold to the highest bidder on an as-is/where-is basis, so bidders typically will want to browse the inventory by location first to get a feel for what’s available in their state. Also, interested parties can browse by category to locate specific items in neighboring states. Based on the eventual selling price, it may be advantageous to travel a bit to pick up a particular item!

Payment for items successfully bid has also been made fairly simple. As explained on the site, “GSA accepts payment in a variety of forms, including U.S. currency (no greater than $10,000); bank cashier’s checks; money orders; traveler’s checks; U.S. federal, state or local government checks; credit cards and online payment through the Department of Treasury’s electronic payment service via GSA Auctions.

In addition to giving the general public an opportunity to score some great buys, the gsaauctions.com site provides two indirect benefits. First, the proceeds from the sales are a way to help defray the cost of running the government. Second, you can think of it as a part of the “green movement,” since many of these items, if not sold for reuse, would eventually wind up in landfills. So, there are multiple winners in this process!
